Ham + Swiss Sandwiches

I love sandwiches. Maybe it’s because bread is life, or perhaps it’s because I worked at Quiznos for six years. Either way, they are one of my favorite foods to make and buy.

While we have some excellent sandwich shops and delis nearby, it was important to me that I could successfully recreate some of my favorites at home, while also using up leftover ingredients from other recipes I always seem to have (I see you lemons and tender herbs).

And to make this even more fateful, my lovely friend and her husband hosted me over the weekend and sent me home with a gorgeous loaf of homemade sourdough (and my very own starter!!!). I knew these sandwiches would be the perfect way to use it and help it reach its full potential.

Ham + Swiss with Lemon Herb Mayo

Makes 2 sandwiches

  • 4 slices of homemade or bakery-made sourdough bread

  • 8 slices or 1/4 pound Boar’s Head Black Forest Ham, thinly sliced (or whatever your deli ham of choice is)

  • 4 slices of Swiss cheese

  • 1 batch of BA’s Lemon Herb Mayo (use any tender herbs you like or have on-hand!)

  • 2-4 tomato slices

  • Red onion, thinly sliced

  • Iceberg or Romaine lettuce

How to make it

  1. Make the herb mayo - The full batch will be plenty for four sandwiches, so feel free to half this if you will not be making these twice. This is really delicious and can be used on all kinds of sandwiches.

  2. Dry toast the bread - Add all of your sliced bread to a cast iron skillet and bring to medium heat (you may need to cook in batches).

  3. Cook for 5-10 minutes total, flipping along the way, or until both sides are toasted and starting to brown. We’re going for a light toast here so no pressure to Alternatively, pop these bad boys in a toaster oven if you’re fancier than me.

  4. Lather the herb mayo on the one side of each piece of bread with a spoon. I know this sounds like a lot, but sauce matters.

  5. Place four slices of ham on two of the toasted, mayo’d bread slices. Then, top each with slices of red onion, two slices of Swiss cheese, 2 slices of tomato and finish with lettuce. Press the other piece of bread on top.

  6. Serve with your favorite chips (or other side) if you remember to buy something.
